Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Scott McFadden Jan 31, 2012 2:37 PM (in response to Dan Caroll)Dan,
Is there a chance that you have text for the main balloon property instead of item number?

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Dan Caroll Jan 31, 2012 2:42 PM (in response to Scott McFadden)Thanks Scott.
No, the "Balloon text" drop down says "Item Number". I have another view on the sheet that is referencing the Default config, and those balloon quantities work just fine. Is there a difference when you have an exploded view referenced?

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Scott McFadden Jan 31, 2012 4:17 PM (in response to Dan Caroll)No, the view type has nothing to do with it.
In the BOM select the arrows to the left of it there is flyout. When you fly this out
doesit indicate that there is a balloon associated to this item?

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Dan Caroll Jan 31, 2012 4:31 PM (in response to Scott McFadden)Interesting! I have never used the flyout on the BOM before. Never noticed it was there until now.
Yes, the parts that I have put balloons on all have the icon in that column.

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Dan Caroll Jan 31, 2012 8:03 PM (in response to Erik Bilello)Erik,
I thought I had it figured out, but was mistaken.
I want the default BOM to show up on my drawing, not the exploded config BOM. If I right click on the view referencing the exloded config, select Properties, then uncheck "Link balloon text to specified table", my quantites show up correctly, but my balloon numbers are not correct any more. If I recheck the box, my balloon numbers are correct, but my quantities are now -X in my view. I don't get it....

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Scott McFadden Jan 31, 2012 9:56 PM (in response to Dan Caroll)Dan,
I used to use an exploded view all the time that was linked to my BOM.
My question is what is the purpose of the config? Does it turn on/off
components? If not why can't you just explode the config that does work
and use that? I never created a special config just for the exploded view.
While this is a bit mysterious, ir sounds like the BOM is getting confused.

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Dan Caroll Feb 1, 2012 1:50 PM (in response to Scott McFadden)Scott,
My assembly has too many parts to do just one exploded view. I need 3 configs all with exploded views to show all the parts without it being cluttered and confused. You can't have more than one exploded view per config. Can't use Display States either because I am using Explode Line Sketch to show how parts assemble, and this sketch cannot be turned on or off in display states. It's complicated and I still haven't found a solution that works for me.
Thanks.

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Scott McFadden Feb 2, 2012 6:51 AM (in response to Dan Caroll)Dan,
That makes total sense. Well it seems that there is a conflict of interest
between the balloon quantities in relation to the BOM and the configs.
My suggestion is to possible overwrite these particular balloons and manually
place the quantity in or I found this link that has a macro that helps with
different quantities of the same item number accross the drawing
that might help you as well.

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Dan Caroll Feb 2, 2012 7:33 PM (in response to Scott McFadden)Scott,
I spent so much time on this, and the solution is so simple I think I want to cry:
In the drawing feature manager tree, I right clicked on the top level and selected "Automatic view update". The proper quantities appear! This setting is supposed to be on by default, and our drawing templates have it turned off.

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Jeff Anderson Apr 6, 2012 2:02 PM (in response to Dan Caroll)Here is one additional thing to note. The BOM properties must be linked to the configurations that you want to display balloons for. When you select multiple configuration the BOM creates columns for the quantity of items for each configuration. If you don't want that to show, you can hide the column in the BOM. You could also do some individual BOMs for each configuration but you would have to hide the rows that you don't want shown (items that aren't in a particular configuration).

Thank you for your comment. It is what solved my issue.

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
Josh Chapman Jan 14, 2016 3:09 PM (in response to Jeff Anderson)Jeff solved my issue too. Sometimes after many edits the balloon quantity goes away to be replaced by -X. really annoying and hard to figure out. the BOM needs to refer to the config on which the balloon resides.

Re: Balloon quantity is -X?
David Dillon May 5, 2017 4:38 PM (in response to Jeff Anderson)This worked for me.
Til now I tried hard to only select configs related to the Bill of Materials and suffered much. I thought hiding a column would be a no-no. it does add complexity for the next bloke to work on the drawing.

S. Casale Jun 14, 2017 11:43 AM (in response to Jeff Anderson)Adding an additonal thank you for this comment - as I seem to need this reminder once a month when I bang my head on my desk forgetting this simple thing about balloon qty's.
I'm too young for this forgetting all the time.
