One part to show two BOM items

Hi, is it possible to have a single part populate 2 or 3 BOM line items? I often run into this problem where I have a part and mounting hardware kit, two seperate part numbers, but I don't want to go through the extra effort of dropping the "hardware kit" into the assembly and mating it all up, etc...if possible, I want the part to just drive a second line item (mounting hardware kit) in the BOM whenever I use the part...is this possible? I also run into this problem when I have designed an assembly with 4 or so complex parts and I use a "mock-up" simplified single part to represent all 4, but I would like them to drive 4 line items in the BOM...is this possible?

Are you talking about one component in two seperate BOM's in two different drawing files

or the same?

Can you post some images describing what you are looking for? I am having a hard time following your words understanding

exactly what you are looking for.

Are configurations involved as well? That plays a huge part in this as well in how you lay out your BOM.

Maybe not what you want, but we have a few part files with no geometry, which we can place in an assembly to show in the BOM. No mates or other bother, and they are always available in the library.

I believe Dwight is on the right track. You could make a sub-assembly containing your part and a blank part to represent the hardware kit. In your main assembly you could replace the part with this sub-assembly and then both item #'s should show up in your BOM.

Thanks for the responses...Dwight, your idea was my only solution...I thought about just making empty part files, then dropping them into an assembly with the "mock-up" part just so I can get these sub parts and hardware to populate. I know this is maybe the faking-it method that is usually not recommended...but this would be a huge time savings on the applications side...where I can use several simplified part files (which represent some complex assemblies) to draw out a representation of our product but maintain the important stuff inside the BOM. Unless someone recommends a different approach to this?

Hi Aron,

You could also keep a blank sub-assembly and use virtural components for many parts as well. Virtual components can be retained to be only in the assembly file so you don't have to worry about maintaining a lot of eternal files.

Could you make an assembly of the parts for mating and then dissolve the assembly? You would have separate parts in the assembly but you only need to mate once.
