Re: Exporting into Revit
Aaron Baumgartner Jan 3, 2012 9:40 AM (in response to David Austin)if it can inport a 3d dwg i would look into the sycode exporter. they have a solidworks add-in that exports directly to a 3d dwg. And they are solids in acad. you can dl a trial of it and use it like 10 times.

Re: Exporting into Revit
Art Thorsby Nov 25, 2012 10:51 AM (in response to Aaron Baumgartner)There is a way to export from SW to Revit.
1. Save/copy your SW model (pack & go if an assembly) with a new name to protect original model.
2. Open new saved model.
3. Run "Defeature" to make ALL components true solids. You may need to run "Defeature" more than once.
4. Save the Defeatured model/part as an ASIC.Sat.
5. Open DraftSight. In the command line type: importSAT in the command line. Browse for your file, hit enter.
6. The part will most probably come into DraftSight in wire-frame appearance. Use DraftSight view to "Shade". Also you may need to hit zoom-extents to see the model. DraftSight has a 3D-Orbit control to spin in all views.
7. Save the new model in DraftSight as a "DXF" file. DXF will directly import into Revit.
It is not a straight forward way to get there, but it works. I have done dozens of models this way with great result from my Revit customers.

Re: Exporting into Revit
Dale Murley Jan 4, 2012 10:52 AM (in response to David Austin)I've had to do this in the past. The best thing to do is export it as a STEP file from SW. Then import it into AutoCad and save it as a DWG. Then import it into Revit. This helps for file size and you don't lose anything. You should be able to do a section view, but you won't be able to modify it because it is still a solid. If it is an easy SW model then someone in the architects firm should be able to generate a simple Revit family model.

Re: Exporting into Revit
Aaron Baumgartner Jan 4, 2012 10:59 AM (in response to Dale Murley)you must be using an acad like mechanical desktop (or mechanical or whatever its called) i just checked and with acad 2010 there is NO option to import a step file.
Now with a mechanical desktop program you can import it as a step then save it.

Re: Exporting into Revit
Dale Murley Jan 4, 2012 11:27 AM (in response to David Austin)I'm using AutoCAD 2012. To import the STEP file. From the AutoCAD ribbon, click Insert tab then select import and you have various import options including STEP. This might not be a feature in 2010.

Re: Exporting into Revit
Siddhartha Carvalho Aug 11, 2014 3:33 PM (in response to David Austin)Hi David,
I am having the same problem here.. I work with Revit and I have a customer using Solidworks.. I need to import their models in Revit and assign a category and material to it so I can cut a section or plan and have it as a Revit object and NOT as a imported file which vanishes every time I try to explode it.
I have looked around and your question is the closest to what I am experiencing, unfortunately the answers get lost down the rope... Import is not the problem.. the problem here is the entity that we end up with in Revit which aside from a simple reference, is pretty much useless...
This is what we need: SolidWorks to Revit Converter - YouTube..
Unfortunately I don't know how to get it.. there is no description on the website or youtube channel.. there is no info on how to acquire it at all!!
Almost 4 years since the original post and we still without a solution!

Alex Worsfold Nov 12, 2014 5:50 PM (in response to David Austin)This is a really old post, but has anyone tried the *.IFC format from SolidWorks into Revit? This was new in 2012 but i have never used it before.

Re: Exporting into Revit
Mousa D Oct 24, 2015 6:07 PM (in response to David Austin)3 years later and still no solution to this problem? They must create a way, especially for the coming years with the BIM development pace we're in.
I have tried to play around AutoCAD and importing as a dwg. however I will only have one solid and thus no families can be created for costing, eCO2 or energy estimation.
If anyone can please give me a guidance or a way, it will be appreciated.
(Other than the plugin BIMDex software)

Re: Exporting into Revit
Vianey Martin Nov 2, 2015 8:47 AM (in response to David Austin)Hi,
I got the same problem, when I insert .sat in my revit files, they were vanishing.
For me the problem was that the .sat was save as a Acis 10 files, if you save it in SolidWorks as a Acis 7 files, I was able to have it on my revit files and you keep almost all the informations.
Hope this can help any of you.

Maris Eiduks Aug 23, 2017 4:53 AM (in response to David Austin)Since 2015 there is Export to AEC which can create *.SAT file, which can be imported into REVIT, only I have no feedback about this solution

Vineeth S. Sep 14, 2017 3:42 AM (in response to Maris Eiduks)Hi Maris,
When you export the IFC file to Revit, you will be losing the SolidWorks model data and won't be getting a native Revit family/ project. I was able to convince my customers using the BIMDeX plugin since it provide a native Revit family/ project. If you come across this problem again, you can contact sales@bim-dex.com. They would advise based on your requirements

Vineeth S. Sep 14, 2017 3:37 AM (in response to David Austin)Hi David,
The best option for your query is to try the SolidWorks to Revit plugin from BIMDeX team. you can export your SolidWorks model to native Revit family/ project and the model can be sectioned in Revit. You can contact sales@bim-dex.com.They would support you on this query
