Welcome to SolidWorks forums Ed.
I just tested it on SW2012 Sp 1.0 and found no problems/issues as you stated. SimulationXpress worked fine with material assigned already while modeling.

I can confirm this bug in SW2013. I've seen this several times over the past couple months. The problem is sporadic.
For example, I did the following:
- Started SW13/SP2/x64
- Created a simple 2"x4"x6' part.
- Assigned material at the part level (PVC Rigid)
- Started SolidWorksXpress
- Assigned fixtures and loads
- I am then told "There is no material assigned to this part" I can clearly see that "PVC Rigid" is assigned in the FeatureManager. If I try to "Choose Material", the proper values are shown, but I still have no option to continue.
can't repro in 2013 sp3.0 x64.
can you guys post your models?
it sounds like the problem is specific to having material applied in advance. i tried carbon steel and alloy steel. maybe specific materials are affected? but i tried PVC rigid, no issue.
