    PDMWE & configs

We're looking at implementing PDMWE but have heard from our VAR and read in other forums that there are certain issues with SW configurations. Can someone give me some input as to what these limitations are and if/when they will be addressed. We use configs extensively with parts and assy's so this is a major concern.

Currently you can't pull a BOM based on assembly configuration. PDMWE will only pull the BOM on all the parts in the assembly. If you don't plan on pulling BOMs out of PDMWE, assembly configurations shouldn't be a problem.

You can still manage your assemblies with normal check in/out operations and the correct configurations will come across. Data cards will maintain configuration specific properties.

            Anything specific in mind :-)

              Hi Steve -

We are aware of the need to pull the config specific BOM and will provide a solution soon.

Well...in order to replace our mainframe system BOM.....we would need a manually created BOM in the PDM system. Starting with the Solidworks BOM is fine...but we rarely model or show everything. Also the BOM has variable items. Like item 5 might give you several different motors to choose from based on job parameters. In the Swx assy, we would only show one of the motors and thus it wouldn't show in the PDMWE Bom. We have a lot of BOMs that way and the BOM gives us the where-used info.

Also, can you link items to one another in PDMWE?

You can customize & create bom easily using pdmwe.

How about the ability create a custom BOM in the PDM system not tied to Solidworks?

Joy, not everything is modeled in SW. For example electrical stuff comes from ECAD or will be hand-entered into BOM. How can you support that side of real life?

We looked at a PDM (ProductCenter) that had its own BOM module. It would read in the Solidworks assembly BOM but only used it as a starting point. Then you could add items to it. Personally I think this is the best way to go if you have complex BOMs
