I need to control a global variable. I'll Call it "A"
And my part has a 3 configurations
Can I define diferent values on configurations for this Global Variable?
- SolidWorks 2012
- Windows 7 x64
I don't have the answer, but I think I know where you can find it. Look in the box "More Like This" to the right. I think the thread "Re: What happened to the 'Link Values' command?", or possibly one of the two others referring to "Linked Value" or "link values", will have what you need. I think that is possible in 2012, but I don't really remember and I don't have time to look through them now.
What I’ve been doing is to start with a sketch that contains all the dimensions I need to configure; usually it is not used to create features/bodies. Then I set the global variables to those dimensions and create equations from those variables. Then I can assign those global variables and equations to the dimensions in the sketches that create the geometry. This gives me two advantages… 1. The absolute distances that the original dimensions represent don’t change if I change the unit system (because global variables are unitless, if you assign “A” to be 1, if the units are inches it becomes 1 inch and if the units are meters it becomes 1 meter) and 2. I can configure the original dimensions and have those values change with the different configurations.
I prefer to use only dimensions for this solution
I can change its values and assing names.
Otherway, I Can assign Proprerties on Dimension Values and they can be changed on Design Tables and Configurations.
But Global Variables on Configuration I haven't seen before and it was a question in my mind.
Yes you can have different values for global variables in configurations.
In the attached part;
The length of the box is the global variable. The height is 1/2 the length. The width is 1/3 the length.
The length changes in each configuration.
Hope this helps.
Please can anyone help Solid works 2012?
I am having problems with using more than one configuration and using global variables!
I have set up one Global Variables set up e.g. [D1@sketch 1 ' set the Global Variable to = 200' ] Its just as an example then the next time i try to use it in a different configurations say 50% size of the original model configuration. I try to use [D1@sketch 1= The Global Variable = 200/2]
Then all the configurations change to the new dimension. 50% smaller when using global variables.
That is divided by some finger or Multiplied when I update any of the configuration all the configurations up date to the new size in that file. Not a lot of help
So far the only way I have got it to work is to set up two Global Variable =200 & =100
As far as I can see It’s just as easy to have two different dimension in each configurations from the smart dim tool.
It is no problem when you select ‘this configuration’ option from the drop down.
However you do not get that option with from the smart dim tool when using global variables option Solid works changed tool and now all my books show how it works but the program does not working like the 2011 SolidWorks
Hope you understand my notes I am very new to SolidWorks and trying to find my way around.
Thanks Andrew Windows 7 X64
