Derived sketches and assemblies

I want to create an assembly that has a derived sketch that is used to cut a component in the assembly. The sketch is derived from component "b". Component "b" is frequently replaced with a different component. When you replace component "b" in the assembly with component "c" and component "a" has a sketch that is derived from a sketch in component "b" then the derived sketch in component "a" ends up dangling. This happens even if the sketch has the name in component "b" and "c".

Any ideas on how I could have a component with a extruded cut that gets it's geometry from a sketch in a different frequently replaced component without hand editing?
