What is better, an Intel Core i7 2600k 3.4Ghz Quad core or a Xeon W3690.
I do a lot of reasonable size assemblies and a lot of rendering.
The W3690 will have an advantage during rendering. The 2600K will have an advantage during modeling and assembly.
So, how much time do you actually spend rendering? I would probably chose the 2600K.
However, also recognise that there are new options out there:
Core i7-2700K (4 cores + hyperthreading)
Xeon E3-1290 (4 cores + hyperthreading)
which are both faster than the 2600K
and coming up for sale next week:
Core i7-3960X at 3.3/3.9 GHz (6 cores + hyperthreading) - will be the fastest rendering CPU when it becomes available
and coming up for sale in about 3 weeks:
Xeon E3-1660 at 3.3/3.9 GHz (6 cores + hyperthreading) - same as the Core i7-3960X
Xeon E3-1620 3.6/3.9 GHz (4 cores + hyperthreading)

Yes, it should be roughly the same as the 2600K for modeling.
I did a little research on the new 3960X, and I couldn't find anyone selling the new motherboards these take. So, I'm not sure when you will be able to buy the systems, you may have to purchase from a boutique builder. We will just have to see.
