Can I export a 2D SolidWorks drawing into a Gerber formated file? I have SolidWorks 2011. If not directly, isthere some 3rd party software to do this?
SW can through the Circuitworks add in, model PCB's. I use it frequently at my job. I first model the PCB and the components that have external connections going through the sheet metal parts that I create. Then I dxf and PDF the PCB to our PCB guy who uses Allegro. He then sends me back the actual board as an LDF and BDF file.
I use those files and Circuitworks to create the actual model of the PCB. Then I place the updated model into my assembly to check all the mounting points and front panel through holes.
Of course this doesn't happen that fast! We do create multilayer boards and some of them are quite complex. I have been watching the market for a SolidWorks add in for the Gerbers (for my own use) but our PC guy generates them with Allegro.
If you find something to create the Gerbers in SW do let me know!
You caanot export Gerber from SolidWorks. The best way, as Bernie says, is to use CircuitWorks or I believe you can save as IDF if you do not have CircuitWorks.
Then use your PCB guys to import this file and generate the Gerbers.
I suspect that you may not have PCB layout software but there are many free versions out there, Google it.
Artwork Conversion Software is a SolidWorks partner and we have been offering Gerber output from SolidWorks for over 4 years.
