Is there anyway to internalize an existing external part into an assembly so that I end up with just one file?
I can see how I could do it from the start, but simply drawing all my parts in an assembly and choosing to save the parts internally. But one of my parts already existed externally, I don't want to have to redraw it.
Btw, I'm using SW2009 SP4.0.
You need SolidWorks 2010 to be able to virtualize external parts. Was an enhancement in SW2010.

Not sure if that capability was in SW2009, but it was in SW2010.
Start a new internal part and then insert this external part into that (break the link to original part) and save internally. But this means you'll have only dumb body in that part. If you can make the part quickly and need it parametric, then better to make it or upgrade to SW2010 or higher.
