Tapered Lofted Bend

I have a Tapered Lofted Bend I am designing with the sheet metal tool box but when I flatten the pattern, it looks physically inconsistant with the part.  When I check the surface area of the top side of the part and compare it to the top side surface area of the flat pattern, the surface area is nearly doubled.  To me, this suggest some stretching of the material is taking place.  I'm not sure if it is the small aspect ratio of the part (~0.1) or if it is due to the fact that the upper profile is a circle and the lower profile is an ellipse.  I do not understand why either would be a problem but who knows.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks!
