seems no matter what search path i specify for pdmworks it will still search all folders subfolders on my drive. it takes way too long to check in a part.
is there anyway to stop this madness?

In the advanced search you can select one folder to search. It will search all sub folders.
The other option is to hide the folders you don't want it to search and then not use the search scope.
(Right click on the project and select Hide Project.)
i should have been more specific. the search paths i wish to limit are for "check in". there is no need for it to search all folders on my drive.
no way to control except turn it off.
in pdmw options> command defaults> checkin> uncheck "include drawings"
or
leave it on and subdivide your working folder into smaller groups
This worked for me. using sw2011 with the included pdm workgroup.

Perhaps the extensive searching is related to the following:
If Workgroup PDM Options > Command Defaults are arranged to "Include drawings" on Check in, then SolidWorks search path is searched.
The search path includes current folders, folders where referenced documents were last saved, and any folders specified in Tools > Options > System Options >
Unchecking "Search file locations for external references", and minimizing / eliminating folders listed in Referenced Documents should reduce the effort SolidWorks expends in searching.

You may have already tried this, but I don't have many other ideas. In "PDM Vault Admin" you can create an index for the vault items but I suspect that if you have any references within a checked-in file to non-vaulted items, that those locations would be searched also.
