To what extent does the threaded tapped hole have to be modeled when using the bolt element?

Question asked by Jonathan Bechtel on Aug 21, 2011

Has anybody notices every bolt example or tutorial never handles the threaded fastener?

I understand when using a bolt you use two clearance holes.  But what about the threaded portion when using a cap screw.  I've spent the last two months with my models having the simplified thread feature.  In addition, the dreaded SL1 or whatever error!

What is the minimal feature required to correctly work with the bolt element.   What is the proper hole dimension?  The minor, major, pitch?  The thread length?  Does the element take into account the length of engagement?

I feel like I'm not taking full advantage of the bolt element?  The problem is that the help and tutorials all deal with the bolted flange!
