How do intelligent people handle parts revisions - through configurations?
Do you have PDM? If so then the vault can handle and drive it.
If not setup a custom property to have it manually filled in.
No PDM, just learning how to use the tool, moving up from 2D world.
Custom property - where do I look for that option and what do I attach/tie it to?
Take a look at this link for custom properties
and then look into the property tab builder.
Before we started using PDM, we would add the rev letter to the file name of the OLD revision. This allows the newest revision to always keep the same part number to help alleviate problems finding files. Of course going back to pull up old revisions of assemblies is a real PIA, but that doesn't happen very often, so it was acceptable.
Now that we use Workgroup PDM, it keeps track of old revisions for us and we don't have to worry about it anymore.
I'm guessing you want to keep a copy of the old part file around.
Without PDM, I'd recommend copying the whole part and putting it void folder with it's revision number in the name. With configurations, it's far to easy to accidentaly change all the configurations instead of just the active one. In addition, if you used configurations for revisions, it would be considerably harder to use them for other uses.
