You have a couple of options to improve using blocks. First, after deleting the block, go to the feature manager and expand the blocks folder. All deleted blocks will appear with a greyed out icon. select these blocks and delete them from the tree. This will purge the block from active memory. Second, if you select a block after inserting, you can select a check box called Link to File. This works essentially like an AutoCAD Xref. The downside to this is that it can make drawings slower.

Thanks for the reply but. I assume you are talking about drawings not models. I'm using blocks in the model file.
I have little to no use for them in a drawing.
Model files do not have a blocks folder in the tree. I've have set the hide/show tree items to show but theydon't show in models.
It would be nice if SW was consistent.
