Where do you go to specify the maximum height of a table so that the excess line items will spill over onto the next section of the BOM? The SW help menu mentions the idea but I cannot find where the options are to set it.
If you just RC on the line you want to split at it will split either above or below
that point. The BOM does not split automatically.
I understand that part of it, but every time i either add something or take away something in the BOM, the split secitons stay stagnent. For example, my company standard is that the first BOM section can only have twenty items to allow for space for the revision block; I want to take out items 19 and 20, and when i do, the BOM stays at 18. It doesn't bring the items from the second section to fill in those 2 empty spots, it just re-numbers the remaining parts in the list. I read somewhere in the SW help menu that you can specify a height maximum for a split BOM and parts that would exceed that height automically go to the beginning of the next section. It just doesnt say how to do it.
You said you are taking out items 19 and 20. I assume that you mean you are deleting them, and you are right that SW won't fill them in. You need to drag those items to the other section of the BOM instead of deleting them and then two items from the other section will move to the first. After dragging them to the bottom of the second section you can delete them then.
I never had sucess draging them from one section to the other. I doesn't appear to allow
you to do that. At least in the attempts I have tried.
Kevin, I found that exact same section in the help file and it is ver vague.
Yeah, it makes it seem like I can do what I am asking about, but it doesn't show how or where i can do what i want to do.
Talk about a let down. When I have worked with the split BOMs, when one
section became to long I always had to rejoin them and then resplit them
at a different location. One more evenly. Yes, a royal pain.
I have definitely been able to drag them from one section to another in SW2010.
Edit: OK, I went back and tried again to make sure and it turns out I was only half right (that's better than my average). I can drag parts from the second section to the first but not from the first to the second. They appear to immediately jump to the top regardless of where you drop them but then you can grab them again and drag them farther down if you wish. So you should be able to drag two parts (probaly one at a time) to the first section which will bump the ones at the bottom to the second section.
Well, in 2011 it ain't working!
RC the BOM, select tab Control, check split tables into multiple sections, adjust the table height.
I don't see that option when i right click the BOM. Probably due to the fact that i am running SW 2009 SP5.1.
I use SW 2009 SP4.1, maybe that is the reason.
I am not even sure that BOM splitting was available in 2009.
I can split the BOM no problem, but I can't do a lot of the other things i need to do with the split table.
That is for the Excel style BOM. I believe the others are using the SW style BOM.
You are right, I never know the difference, so the solution is to build an Excel BOM.
Except those aren't parametric.
Yeah, I have all of my BOM information within the 3D models so I create my tables within Solidworks to keep the parametric link and have them automatically generate.
Both the Excel-based and SW table-based BOMs are parametric. Only when a BOM is saved externally to an Excel format is the parametric link broken.
