is there a way to turn off the "preview window"?

i use "real graphics view" and it seems a waste of system resources that the "preview window" is always updating; or that when you hit the "render" button, the system fires up the preview window first, then opens the render window.

would be nice as an option to have it on or off as a separate function to "render"
