Changing child sub-assemblies from parent with configuration tables

Greetings!  Long time lurker, first post.

Hopefully I can describe this with clarity

I've got an assembly that is using a configuration table to drive numerous size configurations for numerous sub-assembles with their own configuration tables.  In these situations, the parent config table calls the config of the child assemblies just fine.

My challenge is where I have a child assembly that I want the parent to be able to change only one sub-assembly of the child assmebly (that has its own config table), all through the parent config table.

I've found that if I bring the specific sub-assembly up to the parent - I can call the assembly just fine.  When it is just a part of an assembly I bring in, the parent config table can't see it.
