Mechanical DeskTop still needed for SolidWorks Converts?

Recently had to go to 64 bit OS for large scale assy's in SolidWorks 2010.  We have huge volume of MDT legacy modeling in parts & large scale assy's & Mechanical DeskTop 6-7 doesn't seem to want to play well on 64 bit OS so questions are;

     -Is newer SolidWorks 2010 / 2011 is still dependant on the MDT geometry engine to do feature based modeling conversions ?

     -Can older MDT versions be made to work on 64 bit systems,  if so how can we tweak it so it will actually launch w/o crash ?

     -If MDT install is still necessary for SolidWorks to do decent feature based modeling converts, is there any other alternative to MDT engine ?
