I have created an assembly of file size 1.2 GB
while working on it I find it extremly difficult to perform any operation, it is taking exorbitant time.
can anybody advice me how to work faster.
what configuration of the computer is needed to handle this type of assemblies?

I am working on sw 2010 since my customer wants it.My system specifications are 64 Bit, 8 GB Ram with windows 7. I have tried Light weight assembly mode as well. I have found a solution of selective assembly while opening the assembly.I can specifically select the part of the total assembly I want to work with. but I am not happy with this solution.

Apart from setting up a good computer to handle large assemblies, you also need to know the techniques to handle Large Assembles

When I was at SWW2011 this was a major topic of discussion.
I would first ask you what are your system specs? Version of solidworks and service pack?
Other things suggested is you can create configurations that suppress chunks of your assembly
to make it more manageable. Also under Tools>Options>System options there is an assembly
selection, what do you have your assembly components set to? Might be too low. Yopu can
also work in lightweight mode as well.
