Revision Table Auto-update

Hello everyone,

I have been setting up PDMW for my company and came across a couple issues with the revision table that I cannot seem to resolve on my own.

Problems:

1. When I check in a drawing of the first time it automatically creates a new row in the revision table with the revision A. I don’t want it to start creating rows in the table until revision B. Otherwise, the revision A row will always say “Drawing Released” for all drawings. Is there a way to fix this?

2. Is there a way to map approvals for the revision table? For example, if I want each revision to be approved by Engineering and Manufacturing, then the approving person from each division could type something into a mapped field and it would appear in the revision table. I have attached photos for clarification. Is this possible?

been broken for a long time.

your best bet is to fill out table before checking in.
make sure to disable the rev table in pdmwadmin.

  ditto to what Ken says. I like the functionality of the rev block, but the linking to revisions in PDMW doesn't follow very well.

  I will triple what Ken said. At my old company we turned that function
  off. While we manually filled in our revision blocks, PDM drove the revision
  in the title block.

Many Workgroup PDM users / administrators may be well aware of this but just to clarify the capability of the enabled (auto-update) Revision Table in regards to Problem 1, noted above:

In Workgroup PDM, the 'Revision Scheme' and 'Revision Table' tabs allow for a variety of settings, so the check-in sequence can be arranged to align with typical lifecyle scenarios. For example, many companies use numeric revisions for Preliminary / Prototype/ Preproduction status and alpha revisions to represent Production status. Therefore, please note that the first check-in does not have to be at "Revision A", unless of course that is one's intent.

This 'Revision Scheme' tab screen shot image attached shows the arrangement of a typical progressive Rev 1, 2, 3,..., Rev A, B, C, ... scenario that also allows for intermediary working copies, as desired.

This 'Revision Table' tab screen shot image attached shows the corresponding settings that manipulate the table row data. In this scenario the Revision Table only adds a row for Primary (1, 2, 3,...) and Secondary (A, B, C,...) revisions, but not for a working copy. The check boxes and buttons may be arranged any way desired. For instance, if the user desires a table row to be added during Production revisions only, then in the 'Rules for revisions' only the Secondary box would need to be checked.

As regards Problem 2 noted above, some companies have found that they no longer need to keep a record of Approval in the Revision Table. With the increasing use of company PDM systems, many engineering groups that use Workgroup PDM have developed a hybrid method by simply (1) updating the CAD via the vault, (2) uploading the PDF drawings into the company PDM system, and (3) using the company PDM system for the electronic approval, and release. While this method is redundant for having to manage CAD in two locations, it does bridge the communication gap inherent with Workgroup PDM and generates the electronic record of approval and release that for all intent and purpose is essential in managing CAD effectively.

If a company PDM change order is rejected for a needed correction, then the workflow can be repeated to correct the matter. If the change order is rejected to terminate the change request, then the vaulted CAD can be rolled back to the prior revision along with a brief descriptive note viewable in the vault record.

Of course, this hybrid scenario is not perfect. It is however quite manageable and effective for the smaller sized engineering group for which Workgroup PDM is tailored.
