i have this part which is ment to be lovely and smooth ontop with the hole in. ive added a multiple of fillets around it as you can see, but i know theres a better way?!
It's hard to say what you were trying to achieve. Fillets can change the character of a part in many ways. One thing that seemed to be making things hard for you is that there are fillets trying to go across non-tangent intersections, or fillets right up next to a non-tangent edge. Notice that I filleted some of the edges with big radiuses because there were almost tangent, but not quite.
Anyway, this is just another approach, there are a lot of things you could do with this part.
Here's my shot. After looking at Matt's, it's not much different than his.
Couple things I used. Face fillet to fillet over/absorb a small face. The constant width option on two fillets, added 'constant width' to their names so they'd be easy to find.
