Does anyone know if the default inplace mate when inserting a new part in an assembly can be turned off?
Short answer is No. However; it can be deleted after it is created.
If you are inserting an external part, right click the part in the Feature manager and select Float.
If you are creating the part while inside an assy, select the In Place mate and hit the Delete key.
Like Kelvin said "No" but I always just delete it and either contrain it using other
methods or fix/float it by RCing on the component. This sounds more like what you are trying to do.
When you insert the part do you Drag-N-Drop it or do you click on the Green Check mark to Accept it?
If you Drag-N-Drop, then the component isn't fixed in place, if you clikc the Green Accept then the component comes in "Fixed" in place.
Hope this helps,
