Automatic Cut on subassembly insertion

I'm trying to create some sort of subassembly or part that will trim its parent assembly on insert.  For example, imagine a 2x4 wall with 16" center studs.  I want to insert a window on the wall, and have the studs automatically trim to fit the perimeter of the window.  Ultimately, I want to be able to move the window and have the wall assembly update the studs to accommodate it.

I'm using SW 2010 SP4 on Windows XP SP3.  I've tried weldments, smart components, and normal subassemblies all without success.  The closest I got was creating an assembly sketch on the wall with the edges created with 'Convert Entities' on the perimeter of the window.  Then I could create an assembly level cut/extrude and select only the studs as the feature scope.  The cut would indeed follow my subassembly window on rebuild, but that method requires too much effort after the insert of the subassembly.

Any help would be great!
