Mating a spherical joint with angular limits?

Hey All

 

I've modelled a ball/spherical joint but I need to mate it in a way that it can't rotate past certain angles IE: when the housing contacts the bolt throuhg the middle. I know that using collision detection would do it but I need something that is on all the time and less clunky to check.

 

Any ideas?
