"Use for positioning only"

I see folks from time to time use the "use for positioning only" option in the Mate PropertyManger to basically position parts without mates. I know there are some users who are probably very opposed to this method, since your parts are just dangling in space. I'd like to hear from both sides of the argument. For those who use this option, why do you do it? Is it primarily out of distrust for mates changing things? Is it to avoid the extra overhead in mate rebuild times? Is it for animation or FEA or some other downstream purpose? Do you also leave sketches underdefined?

For those of you opposed to just letting parts dangle in space, do you think fully or "mostly" defined parts are safer than completely undefined parts? How many of you define rotation on pins, screws, nuts, washers?
