It would be so nice if there was a vewer of some sorts for iPad and iPhone. It would be so easy to bring an iPad to a customer to present projects. Is there one around that I'm missing?
eDrawings® is now available for the iPad®!
You can download this application now.
You could try one of the Remote Desktop Apps.
Yes, this has been requested; quite a few times. I think it would be foolish for SW to not offer this as part of SolidWorks Standard, asap.
They already have http://www.3dvia.com/products/3dvia-mobile/ which allows for viewing models uploaded to the 3D VIA webpage. you would think it would be easy to come up with something stand-alone. Note that 3D VIA is mesh data, not NURBS like SolidWorks. But even of the SW app required exporting to a format just for viewing; who cares. I think we just need a way to store the data locally on the mobile device, to keep the proprietary information secure.
In fact, the existence of 3D VIA mobile makes me assume that they are not developing this on purpose for business reasons; not because it is a technical hurdle. I'd love to be proven wrong.
If they add 3DVIA Player like fuctionallity, to the current APP I wouldn't see the need for a EDrawings viewer APP.
Android or it never happened.
+1 for an Android solution!
I agree, an iPad App for eDrawings would be a very useful tool for our machine engineers as they install at a customer's site. We will be using the AutoCAD WS App for our AutoCAD Electrical drawings.
Yes I use Team Viewer to use my pc remotley but its not the answer, comon chaps bang out a tidy little viewing app please.
Or maybe another option would be to upload the eDrawing to a secured server (read: the cloud) and the app would simply access the eDrawing via a password and username. This would work well for us and our clients as we are forever struggling getting eDrawings to our clients through firewalls. We have also tried 3d PDFs- they grow too large and conversion to .dwf is cumbersome.
BTW, Autodesk released their server-based 3d viewer (Autodesk Design Review) with a very original name: "Autodesk Cloud". This does allow drawings to be uploaded/ updated on the website and viewed via iPhone/ iPad.
Anyone tried the below?
If you head to their blog, it says they support SW 2010, 11, and 12.
Hi all. I'm new here, new to 3D in general and new to SW. Not so new to computers and wanting to look at my CAD files on my hand held though. I even had a CAD program on my Compaq Ipaq back in the early 2000's. Not having a good viewer for 3D on my iPad just seems almost unfathomable. This thread isn’t the reason I came to the boards today but when I saw this at the top of the list I had to respond. I’ve been looking at iCAD from the Apple apps site. I have the free version which only lets you look at their included sample files but it seems to work fairly well. Of course it doesn’t read SW files so they would have to be converted over. My experience has been when you have to do that, things go to crap. So I asked them about the process for looking at our kind of files. The feller says he has a plug-in for SW, not published yet, that he will let me try. If it works like I think, it should be just a matter of exporting, sending to the iPad and ‘enjoying the view’ as they say. We’ll see. I’ll let you know. He’s out of town right now so it’ll be a few days.
If you are using EPDM there was talk of connecting to your vault and veiwing all your files on a tablet or smartphone but I haven't heard or seen any progress on this for a few months. The trial seemed pretty good for a pre-alpha release. Search for "mobile epdm" in the apple app store. I don't think there was anything for android yet...
Here is the original post about it: https://forum.solidworks.com/message/223130
It works! iCAD does what I was looking for. Last night I installed the ‘soon to be released’ (probably later today or tomorrow) SolidWorks plug-in and installed iCAD Pro on my iPad. It only takes a couple clicks to export a model to the iCAD format then all you have to do is send it over via iTunes. The files open up quick and look right. I haven’t tried making notes or that kind of stuff on the iPad yet but will soon. I know the section view works. In fact I like it better on this than i do in SW because it doesn't have an annoying shaded plane to look through.
When it comes to my workstation and software I am willing to spend what is req'd to get the job done, but $59.99 for the iCAD "Professional" version? Really? To view iges files? I can save my files as pdf now and look at a nice 2d for free. I'll wait until there's a nice (and fair priced) 3d pdf or cloud app. Perhaps I'm a little spoiled from all of the 99 cent apps that I have purchased or the free apps that are really great.
Personally, if I need to have something 3D that I can spin I will go the remote desktop route as Adrian suggested. I could run simulations from my iPAD or iPhone (yes, the phone has a dinky screen compared to a Droid and I do wish Apple would take note).
Sorry to sound cranky but really it's just my opinion.
Even Rino Cad has its own iPad viewer, com'on SW give us what we need, please
just a basic eDrawings so we can spin the model and show configurations etc.. how hard could that be..

Your wish has been granted. Here you go: eDrawings for iPad
Gushing with excitment I am, cant wait to try it out
Edit-- Well had a try, as Im sure many other will, not bad thanks SW..
8/10 for the usage
1/10 for the file transfer (like I have time to sync the iPad each time I want to transfer a file, maybe a wifi transfer option will come along soon)
but other wise thanks, its a well needed product and a bargain at $2.. will be using it with a smile to at tomorrows meeting..
Why is this not for iPhone as well when already an iOS launch? Is that something to expect for the future or is there some technical explanation limiting this to iPad?
It was announced to be launched a new MOBILE app.
Slightly disappointed, Its nok like Im gonna start carrying an iPad around.
That's Great!! Been waiting for this for a while and it'll certainly be useful. That said, it's a great first cut, but a couple enhancment requests.
These would make current functionality better:
- drawing performance is sluggish and graphics are poor compared to models
- ability to set spin center (tough reviewing small features on large models)
- ability to open a part within an assembly, or show/hide individual parts
And then of course:
- Support multitasking and/or support opening from cloud services
I take back my comment on the file transfering, emailing to the iPad works well as dose wifi'ing to a 3rd party app, like good reader and 'opening in'
Bring on the further enhancements
You can say them here: The official eDrawings mobile wish list
eDrawings® is now available for the iPad......
but how efficient it is...?
So far with the updates from people it is working fine and for $1.99 it is not a big deal.
if it is so...
then it is a pleasent news, now we can have CAD in our phones this is iCAD... Great.
