SolidWorks assembly configuration update problem

I give up, so I'll ask the pros.  Trying to master configurations and I created the attached Crane valve model with two configurations in it.  When modeling the central disk I can't get SolidWorks to correctly update the feature labelled 'shaftShell' between configurations.  It is based upon a top-down approach from a driving model, but fails at this step.  If the 24 inch configuration is working, then switching to the 2 inch version results in the shaft diameter not appropriately linking to the new shaft diameter in the driving sketch/skeleton.  If I edit the sketch and double-click on the equationed dimension it will then update itself, but not before then (even performing a rebuild).  Alternatively, if the 2 inch version works, then switching to the 24 inch version results in problems.

Do others see the same issue?  Is there some way to get around this?  Thanks!

SolidWorks Design Kit (stripped SolidWorks 2010, I believe), Win7 32 bit, cheap HP laptop with crummy graphics on mainboard, but works, dual core 2.1GHz w/ 3Gig memory
