Handrail modelling - Adding parts & exploded view of structural members

Hi,I'm new to weldments and after trying out the tutorial,I have a couple of questions.

I'm trying to model a handrail which is made up of square tubes.Although the separate tubes won't be welded together,I figured the SW weldments feature would be fastest way to go about doing this,rather than extrude individual parts & assembling them.Connector pins or plugs would be used to join the various tubes together.

Would it be possible to create the handrail frame and add the connector plugs as separate parts in an assembly?

Also,could I have an exploded view of all the parts including the main structural members even though they are lumped as one part?

yes. in fact you can save the bodies out from the weldment part and create an assembly "auto-magically". when the weldment part is modified the saved bodies will update, which will result in the assembly updating.

no the structural members will be lumped as one. unless you choose the option above to save the bodies as individual parts.

no the structural members will be lumped as one. unless you choose the option above to save the bodies as individual parts.

How would you go about saving the individual bodies from the weldment part and create an assembly from that?

Currently,I'm using this method to create an exploded view,but it's not really ideal if my assembly consists of the weldment part as well as other parts.

Ok, figured out how to save the individual bodies.(http://help.solidworks.com/2010/english/SolidWorks/sldworks/LegacyHelp/Sldworks/Features/Split_and_Save_Bodies.htm)

Now I'm torn between having the bodies as individual parts or as a weldment part. In a BOM,the 1st option lists all the parts but doesn't automatically give you the cut lengths which you would get with a weldment part.

Any suggestions?

before generating/updating the cutlist you can save the bodies by just right clicking.

you can also create the assembly from here as well. this is a really cool feature.

slightly different from a split.

see jpeg's.

personally i find cut lengths overrated.

i'm old school and prefer to use dims.

you can add dims in the assembly views.

with individual bodies you could create a drawing for each part and dimension it like any other item.
