Material not rendering correctly in Photoworks

So maybe this is a stupid question but how do I get a custom material to render correctly in Photoworks? When I made the new material, I defined the appearance as matte gold and it looks fine when working with the part/assy but when rendered, it either is black or white. I changed the appearance of the part to matte gold and then it renders fine I do not wish to manually define every part that uses this custom material but rather automatically apply the rendered appearance. An example is the Solidworks defined materials. You pick stainless steel and it looks correct when your working on it AND when it is rendered (no extra appearances need to be added during rendering). I am guessing I just missed a check box or something. I am using SW2010 SP4.0.
