Best procedure for clean install from 2010 to 2011

Im ready to upgrade my machine from SW 2010 to 2011

Whats the best/most reliable procedure for this as Ive just been reading some installation info from my VAR & it says:

Make a note of the SolidWorks settings (File Locations etc) so that you can set up your upgraded installation as per the previous one. Note – it is NOT RECOMMENDED that you use the Copy Settings Wizard when upgrading major versions

Ive used the Copy Settings in the past with success so will it not work now?

Normally I copy the settings, backup my Toolbox, transfer my license, switch off Antivirus then uninstall solidworks (after logging on as administrator)

Is there any need to cleanup the registry manually etc? Seems a bit cumbersome/long winded having to do this

you dont have to do the registry etc, but if there are any niggles in 2010 they could get carried over to 2011. this is the same with copy settings. I agree it is a bit cumbersome to do all that, I have always just upgraded, but I think when I go to 2011 I may do the full works. My Var has said they will do it for me.

Also, while the copy settings wizard is not fool proof, it does for the most part
save your settings. I would run it regardless if you ahve never run it in the past.
It will at least give you a platform to start from.

  Ive used the Copy Settings Wizard in the past to save your keyboard shortcuts, menu customization, toolbar layout, and file locations etc, but my Support guy said that it also saves some registry info too? Is this right?
  
  He was saying that if I did use the copy settings for 2010, then cleaned the registry, if I then re-applied these settings to the newly installed 2011 solidworks it may transfer some registry info from the SW2010 version.
  
  He recommended just taking screenshots of my Solidworks screen layout to try & get the new install as it was - a bit longwinded I think!! Is there no other 'safe' way of copying my menus & toolbars??

    I have not heard about the settings wizard saving registry entries, but what makes sense about that
    is since it is a settings saver and so is the registry, that AFTER the settings wizard files is applied to the
    newly installed version of Solidworks that it would affect the registry.
    
    I would say in ensure a good clean solid load of the software that there is no other way. You will get a lot
    of suggestions and some may be bandaid applications, but there is nothing like a clean install.
    
    Is this issue related to your other posting regarding the sketches not showing up? Might be.

      Yes you're right it partly is - I need to change over to 2011 to get the added benefits in Photoview360 for rendering but Im hoping to clear up any past 'glitches' I had.

    A lot of the UI (User Interface) settings are saved in the registry.
    
    When the copy settings wizard is run, it is just saving those registry keys. For example, the docking position of the Command Manager is saved as a registry key.
    
    The only keys that should be saved are those that affect your settings, not the other keys that SW has. Is it possible, that a bad key from 2010 could be rewritten using the copy settings wizard? Yes its possible, but I haven't seen it adversly affect anyone.

Rather than restating my long winded opinion on this, please go to https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/28615 and read it there.

But the short version is that I prefer to always do a totally clean install of a new version as anything carried over in the registry brings the opportunity to carry problems with SW, eDrawings, SEPDM, etc.

Here's my 2011 change doc.

One of the issues we run into is that we mostly have SW plain and std. eDrawings comes with that. But we also have SEPDM and eDrawings Pro comes with that, and that's the version we need to be running. So it's important to make sure the registry has the Pro info "on top".
