Why would this be.....?
The one that works as it should has over defined warnings everywhere.
The other is ( fully defined ) but one jaw will push clean into the other.
I need this to work on the screen like it does on the work bench.
How can I make my assembly fully defined & still have it work like it really does....?
I am stuck.

Not sure what you are seeing that you don't llike.
I opened the assy DOUBLE CYLINDER ASSB RMP 2 F D.SLDASM and it seemed to work fine. No errors and each side can move from fully open to where the dowel pin stops it, the motion of each side being based on its limit mate.
Now, maybe what you are wanting to see is both sides moving equally toward the dowel pin. I have done that on this version that I attached. I did not revise the limit mates to stop them at the meeting point - you can do that if you wish.
But if you really want each side to move independently but yet stop at the point of touching the other one wherever it is in its stroke, you wil have to use Collision Detection each time you want to drag it. So see if what I gave you will suffice. (I purposly didn't state how I did it - it's very simple to discover.) :-)

Please open the DOUBLE CYLINDER ASSB K RMP 1 file - you will see that the first motion pushes the second away from it's stop pin - just the way it really works - but it is over defined.

I think the behaviour is normal. See the attached picture I made from DOUBLE CYLINDER ASSB K RMP 1. Although I suppressed the mate indicated by the arrow still there are no (-) signs before the parts or assy's. So the thing is fully defined. But due to the limit mates I can pull the DUAL CYLINDER part up and down and it moves the JAWS also. So there is still freedom to move. Which I believe is a normal SW behaviour.
I did the same thing but I'm sure this not what he is looking for. He would have to suppress one of those limit mate and use animation/motion to show the working.
I arrived at the same points. Therefore I offered the model that I did above where the jaws will meet inthe middle in spite of having different travel distances. I figured that was the best compromise. But, we also don't know what he requires vs. desires.
It's not wrong to dig for a real life simulation and his solution actually moves properly but indicates errors, and not unexpected as there are limit mates that are trying to "over" control it. However, on the flip side, it is an interesting scenario in that they are limit mates, and none of them require anything to be in any particular position, therefore why the error symbols?? All positions are still within the limit parameters.
Rich, I would ask that you submit this to your VAR as the intended proper motion does happen - it's just the error symbols that cause a problem. I would like SW to study this one. Let us know what you hear.

I have had excellent results modeling & designing with SW - But I am lacking in motion control success - big time.
I am concerned that if the assembly model was over defined I would have problems with the next step - there is tooling that bolts down to the vise jaws and I need to show motion, clamping, and pressure with deflection.
It makes no sense to do this with out the actual limits of the stops & real world travel.
Would I be better off adding the final constraints in the motion study....? Would that even work...??

One more question while I am thinking about all this - if I do not use Distance Limits - could I some how use the Stop pin as a hard contact - you know, as a stop....????
I believe you can do it in motion study using contacts but that will be in animation only.
You have to be on subscription. Then the best way is to start SolidWorks Rx and walk through the process. You describe what you see and what you want it to do. You also record a video of the movement. Then pack up all the parts (one of the steps) and send them to your VAR. That method differs based on who they are. With ours, (Fisher/Unitech) I submit a case on their website.
