I am new to SolidWorks after using ProE. I design check fixtures for automotive parts. I have created a start assembly that has my base and bunch of attached components to it that are used in every design. When I place my math data (the automotive part) in my assembly and move it above my base feature in the tree, I want to then move my base in relation to the math data but it says that it is already fixed. How do I make it so I can move my base to where ever I want it to be in XYZ?

By default, the first part to enter in SolidWorks assembly is fixed. You can notice by finding a (f) in front of file name in the part tree. In order to move it around, right click on the part and select float. This will make the part free to move/rotate. Now you can use mates to position the part as required.

The base is fixed because solidworks automatically fixes the first component inserted into an assembly. Right click on the component in the feature tree and select "float". You can then add mates to position the component. Note: you can tell if a component is fixed by the "(f)" next to the part name in the feature tree.
