Toolbox Part Custom Properties

I currently have a custom property field for all parts called "Number" which my users fill out for part numbers. When we create a bill of materials that includes our parts and hardware coming out of the Toolbox, the column that I've created for "Part Number" using "Number" as the property fills out correctly for parts we have created and obviously not for the Toolbox hardware. Is there anyway to have the Toolbox files fill in a custom property field titled "Number" with the "Part Number" information that we enter into the Toolbox Settings program?

Automatically no.
But what you can do is when you bring the toolbox part in RC on it in the feature
manager and select "Edit Toolbox Definition" and type in your own configuration name
and set the custom prioperty in that config. Then the next time you brin g in the part
it should be the way you want it.
Over time the toolbox will populate with the custom properties you need and want.
But I caution you. Make sure you back up your tool box files in a different location.

  The "Configuration Name" is completely different from the information that shows up in the BOM.
  
  Let me try to explain this a bit better.
  
  We have a part file labeld WF1234-A.sldprt. It has a custom property field labeld "Number" which we have filled in with the text "WF1234".
  
  We have a hex bolt from our Toolbox. In the toolbox editor, the part number field is filled in with "12CP123-12-123".
  
  In my BOM, when I create a standard, default, SW created BOM, there is a part number field with the top header selected as "PART NUMBER". This is the default one that SW gives you. For the hex bolt, it shows the "12CP123-12-123" correctly for the fastener. For the part WF1234, it shows "WF1234-A" because the default for the "Bill of Materials Options" is Document Name.
  
  When I change the Column header to be custom property "Number", the part file info shows up correctly as WF1234 but because there is no "Number" custom property field for the bolt, it's empty.
  
  Now I know one workaround for this is to change the WF1234-A.sldprt's "Bill of Material Option" to "User Specified Name" and then enter "WF1234" there but this is rather cumbersome and doesn't get linked to any custom property field for which to use later.
  
  So is there a way to create a custom property field (relatively easily) for our toolbox items called "Number" for each configuration?

    No, I get it.
    What I am saying is once you have this configuration of the toolbox part in place,
    call it up once it is placed in your assembly and then add your custom property.
    If you have the tab builder in place then all of the properties in that will automatically
    show up on each part called up.
    
    We used to do this at my old job. We like you had BOM's that needed filling in.

      This worked until I closed out SW and reopened the parts. The information I had entered dissapeared.

    You could also simply change the custom property of your part to be "Part Number" instead of "Number".

      Believe it or not this doesn't work. The built-in solidworks "PART NUMBER" column for a bill directs to the configuation "Bill of Materials Option" variable. This is in 2009, don't know if they changed it in 2010.

        When I did this in my old job, it was SW 2009. We had the description and the part number
        show up in the BOM. But what we did now that I think of it, for these configurations there
        is a selection that asks you how you want the item to be listed in the BOM and we said by
        configuration name and the name was the part number. Maybe this would be an option for you.

        I think what we are ultimately going to do is live with it pulling in the revision level for the time being. We hide the bills and don't show them on the drawing. The bill is strictly used to pass the information to our document control person to enter into our ERP system. If it becomes a big deal in the future I think we will use this step. Thanks for your help.
