Anyone know what this does exactly?
not anywhere in the 2011 help or the what's new.
Don't have 2011 installed but can say that this is to update the config of child view if there are changes in parent view. Say you a have part with 2 config. No in parent view you changed to 2nd config but child view is having 1st config. But with this option selected, the child view too will get updated/changed to 2nd config.
Hope this make sense.
I thought that's what it did, but I guess I was looking for the ability for any child views to NOT be linked. I admit as soon as I posted I started playing with the different options and looking closer at what this means, because it doesn't mean exactly what I wanted it to mean, but it does mean what it says
Nice option to have, I won't use it all the time, but maybe on some of our templates.
It will force new projected views to reference the same configuration as the parent. See below:
"projected" <--- that's the key word I was not seeing in the options label... when I read child I thought it was opening up ALL child views (detail, setion...) but it really only refers to PROJECTED views... the label should say "Link projected view's configuration to parent view's configuration"
thanks guys, you have helped me confirm I was seeing it the way I should... not the way I wanted
Thanks Paul, I will use this in a new tech tip. Can I give you credit for that in the article (can I use your name)?
no problem, you can use my name and I won't even charge you for it

I don't have SW2011, but for my knowledge is :
Parent and child Config just happen when you right click on the existing config. "config and add derived configuration" , the config just created is child.
The child config will copy all info. from parent such as: Part No.; Material.......
In the drawing level:
when you check that box ( as you listed above): when you creat annotation and use the link to its property: It will not take its properties but it will take the parent properties ( Let's say : parent config : you use material AL6061, but child config. you changed to Alloy Steel) the annotation of will appear as AL6061 not Alloy Steel).
And it happen to BOM also...
I just guess
