I'm trying to do the smart component tutorial, but the tutorial file is read only and I can't do any of it. Any suggestions?
Not quite understanding what you are talking about. All the tutorials that are inbread
into the Solidworks software are meant to follow along and just simply instructional
guides. You just do what it tells you to do. Maybe I am missing something.
Can you elaberate more?
Yes, the other tutorials I have done have been that way. However, the Creating Smart Components doesn't seem to work. Step 1 I open the file that is linked to. Step 2 I go to Tools, Make Smart Component. I do not have the Make Smart Component in my Assembly Toolbar, as the Tutorial says. Step 3 I select the bearing for smart component. When I do so, I get this message."This selected component is read-only. You cannot make it a Smart Component". I have the demo version of 2010. I've been trying to figure this out for several days. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Here it is if anyone can get it as a write file.
You need to save out your own copy of the files. Open the assy and then open each part file and save your own copy of each. Or use Pack & Go to save your own copy of the assy and all the parts at the same time.
You can also get to the Make Smart Component icon in the Tools menu.
You just said the key.
If you only have a demo version this option is not available to you.
You should be able to at least take the bearing or any other component
and so a save as and have ownership that way. Or you can find the
part on your harddrive and RC on it and uncheck "Read Only".
Well i am having the same problem. I am a few months new and have completed multiple tutorials and have not had read only file problems. Will not allow me to save the tutorial as my own and to work with it. Half a morning wasted with these smart components and i am not feeling so smart. Anyone can help? Usually the tutorials are great but not when i cannot get it to do what it is supposed to.
