Measuring Friction in 3D Contact patch

Question asked by John Sutherland on Nov 27, 2010

When, in Results property manager, I specify measurement of 3D Contact force, I request display of vector.

My understanding is that the vector must always be normal to the contact patch, and it is, until I additionally specify friction in the 3D Contact property manager.  Then the displayed contact force vector is tilted off normal.

I think this is a wrong result from SolidWorks.

When, in Results property manager, I try to specify the friction force by clicking on the contacting faces, the popup message tells me it is expecting a mate, but there is no mate in 3D Contact.  See the image.

It looks like I can specify friction at the contact patch but not measure it.
