Slow performance 40% of the time

I upgraded to 2011 SP0 a few weeks ago. I'm noticing that about 40% of time, when I open or start a new part, assembly, or drawing I get extremely poor performance and visual lag. The solution so far has been to simply close the file and re-open it, but that is getting annoying. Has anyone experienced similar issues?

I normally have great performance when things work well.

FYI:

I am running XP 32 bit with an intel core 2 duo, and an ATI FireGL V3600 gpu driver version 8.583.0.0

I'm going to try to update the driver to see if this solves the problem, but I think that my normal performance 60% of the time might rule that out.

Charlie,
When you upgraded,
Do you still have your old version on the computer?
If you don't did you clean out your registry from the old install?
How much memory does your system have?

  I don't have the old version installed. I just allowed the install mangager to do the update for me.
  
  I did not clean out the registry. I have had bad experiences in the past messing around in there and I am not sure what exactly I need to clean out.
  
  I have 2GB of RAM on this system.

    Here is a file for the future that shows you what to clean out of the registry.
    2 GB of memory is low. I would suggest at the very minimum 4 GB.
    I personally have not upgraded to 2011, but specs say this much memory for 2010.

I have the same issue and I have a WIN 7 X64 with 8 gigs of ram. 2011 is very slow and I get hangs in between commands some times, I also had the program become unresponsive and I end up having to end the task. The assmlies that I have been working with are not complicated and only 3 - 5 parts.
I did a clean install per the directions of my tech cupport for SW which included cleaning the registy.
I still have issues.

  I have upgraded to my GPU drivers to the recommended version on Solidwors' website. However, I still run into this issue randomly. I don't suspect that it is memory related because I can have a complicated assembly (50+ components) that will respond fine. Then I open a single part and it will become very sluggish, even if no files are open in the background. So far the problem seems to be very random.
  
  The only solution I have found is to close the suspec part and re-open it (several times in some instances).

Bumping this thread because I have the same propblem. Windows 7 pc with 8 gigs of ram. Affects even single part files. Inbetween the terrible performance it runs great, similar to a poster above me, and to the OP. Im thinking driver issues? Hardware should be fine and its a fresh install of both windows and solidworks.

    Student version of solidworks: 2010-2011.
    Relevant specs:
    i7 (sandy bridge)
    8 gigs of ram
    Crucial SSD
    ATI 6790 graphics card (im still a student so I have a gaming card and not a workstation card)
    
    Fresh install of windows 7 ultimate, fresh install of solidworks, all drivers up to date.
    
    Again most parts and assemblies run smooth as butter. Yet there are some part files, even small ones, that run rough from time to time. The problem is often alleviated by reopening the part or saving it. Also interesting, sometimes adding a feature to the part file stops the studdering. Weird.

      Your gaming video card is your problem. Assuming you have the 2600K CPU. SolidWorks does not work well with gaming cards. Your video card graphics are likely locking up from time to time and SolidWorks needs closed and restarted. Just the cost of the compromise of going with a gamer card in your system.

      If Anna's right, and she usually is, you can replace your graphics card with an ATI FirePro V4800 for $160. You can get the V3800 for only $100, but the V4800 is more than twice as fast. Not too much money when you compare it to the cost of your education.

        While I dont disagree it could be a driver and software not-playing-nice issue...
        
        My old PC, which was a xp build, just one gig of ram, amd 64 processor (the original!) and nvidia 6800gt (a gaming card from 2004...an old PC indeed) used the same version of solidworks for a year just fine, even while working with large assemblies.
        
        Whether or not I have a graphics card that enables full GPU acceleration or not is not the issue. The issue is random stuttering that is sometimes prevalent and other times absent, even within the same work session. It is one thing to buy hardware for enhanced performance (or meeting performance requirements), but another to buy it simply to avoid a bug. Hopefully there is a fix to this issue. Thanks for the help offered thus far, though. As of right now I am able to work through the issue, fortunately.
