Sometimes it's easy to add a split line for probing a result using the "on selected entities" option, however it's got me thinking, can this induce unwanted hinging (moments) because of the created edges or are these nullified during meshing?

Split line does not create any unwanted geometry that could induce stress concentration (or hinging). In fact, it has a useful effect of orienting mesh generation.
