So I'm taking a class in Solidworks Simulation, and the book talks about inserting a "split line" in order to perform a stress analysis, but it doesn't really explain WHY to do it.

So, I'm curious - what is a split line, why is it used, what does it do, why is it needed, and are there times when you would NOT use it?  If so, could you explain when to use it, and when NOT to use it?
