Hello,
Upon opening an assembly from a contractor (assembled from our parts), everything is suppressed.
All of the sub-assemblies & parts have file references that pertain to the contractors machine and have been suppressed
because they can't be found. However, I have my file locations (and reference doc location) pointing to directories
where these files exist on our machines. Why are they not being found?

Why doesn't SW simply search the paths I have defined in my files locations and reference documents?
There HAS to be another way then pointing to each part's location individually.

I agree, I have had my working directories listed under file locations
and have had the same issue. It goes back to what I said before.
Check if "Search file locations for external documents" option in system options->external references is checked.

I don't know why more people aren't screaming their heads off about this. In SW2006, SW dramatically bogered the file search scheme. It used to be simple: look in search directories, then work directories, then where file used to reside. Now it's all over the map. AND SW looks in all kinds of oddball places before getting to the second search directory in your list. Just look in SW2010 help under "Search Routine for Referenced Documents".
This is a quiet but profound screwup of global proportins on SW's part.

You sent this assembly or at least come of the parts to your contractor.
Apparently he had a different directory structure then you do and saved it out back to you
with his directory structure. Just unsuppress them and point the assembly to where you have placed
them. When you send it our it remembers the last directory it last opened them up in.
If that directory isn't there, it suppresses the parts.
