I have a ratchet and a pawl on a shaft. In an assembly is there a way to have the pawl ride freely and fall into the dip between the teeth of the ratchet when the ratchet turns counter clockwise? And if it turns clockwise the pawl will lock in the dip between the ratchet's teeth. Thank you.

Yes. It is possible to simulate the conditions explained by you, You have to use SolidWorks Motion to simulate this condition. You have to create 3D contact between ratchet and pawl. Attach a motor to driving component. Add gravity. Now your assembly is ready for simulation. Before simulation you need to fix the component which are static.

One more thing, so the only way I can have this part move the way I want is in motion study? Is there a way I can moved them manually in an assembly and have the same result, thanks again.
"Before simulation you need to fix the component which are static" means you need to fix the parts (using mates or any other way) which don't have any motion.
