Help with frequent crashing.

I'm at my wits end here, and need advice. I've had 1246 SW crashes in the last nine months. The solidworks people imply its my machine. I.T. says its SW. Who knows, maybe its me.

My specs...

Dell Precision T3500

Quadro FX 1800 with approved drivers (from SW site)

6 gig RAM

SW2010 SP4.0

Xeon W3520

Win7-64

Excel 2007

I've reinstalled SW many times, reinstalled the C++ libraries, done repairs on Excel, turned off my virus scanner. Almost all of my crashes are when I'm exiting a design table.

I've got to figure out whats wrongs here. What should I do? How can I trouble-shoot this?

I am shocked that you have that many with SP4.0
I had a ton of crashes with SP2.1 but hardly any at all since having SP4.0

Anyway,can you duplicate your crashes? Meaning are there specific key strokes, command sequences that
you can keep doing and it will always be guarenteed to crash?
If so try running the Solidworks RX in the Solidworks\tools install directory. Then send that file to your VAR
and see what they say.

  Its not really repeatable. I did send an RX to SW, and they worked with me to try to solve it, but we made little if any progress.
  
  Almost all of my crashes occur when I enter a variable into my design table by double clicking the dimension on screen. The crash will occur when I exit the DT.
  
  Any significant changes to a DT will usually result in a crash. To work with DT's, I have to make a single change, quit out of the table, save, make the next change and repeat. When I get to the point I need to add a variable, and if I get a crash, I will check that the excel process is still running (and kill it if so), launch SW, open the part, enter the DT, and try adding the variable again. Sometimes I will get 4 or 5 crashes, but eventually it will work. Hope this makes sense.
  
  I also usually get a crash when I shut down SW normally.

    Design tables in general I think havebeen an issue in 2010.
    As far as crashing when exiting Solidworks? I have heard that one before.
    What has worked for me and others (and I would suggest trying this before going ahead
    with what Charles suggested) is if you go to Start>Programs>MS office> there is a diagnostics
    tool there. Run that and see if it helps with your crashing.
    Then if this doesn't work or help, Charles made some excellant suggestions.

      I've done that several times. First time I ran it several months ago, it did report a problem, and it said it corrected it. The crashes continued, so I reinstalled Office too.

        Wow,
        Are you the only one experiencing these crashes or are others having them as well?
        
        If they are assuming they are running the same hardware as well as software.

        There are only 3 people in our group who use SW. One user has the same setup as me (the machines were purchased at the same time), and he has these crashes. The other user uses XP, and rarely crashes.

        My experience has been working in an XP operating system using a 64 bit machine.
        Since SP4.0 crashing has not been an issue.
        I have use Windows 7 and have Solidoworks 2010 and it doesn't crash.
        If you are able to I would see if you can have XP loaded and run 2010 SP 4.0 on it and see if that works.
        It is a lot of work, but may be work it in the long run. Then try in a beta type atmosphere 2011 say SP2
        on a Windows 7 environment.
        
        You have tried pretty much everything and I am running out of suggestions as well I am sure you
        are running out of patience as well as solutions.

    Can you please let me know who at SolidWorks you sent your RX packages to ? I'll try to see if I can get some info out of your RX logs that's more useful if I can track it down.

      It is case 1-1764902801 (VAR SR# 18224). Although the SW operations detailed in the case cause my machine to crash, the VAR's does not. Thanks for the help.

        There's no smoking gun in the RX package telling me what's at fault. I did notice that you have two 3rdparty DLLs loaded (both appear to be related to the same product - something called Synergis Adept 8.2) that may be involved in the first exception that occurs. Could you try turning off those addin(s) and retrying your steps to see if SolidWorks still crashes ?

Sounds like a pretty resonable computer to me, I don't see any thing specific that should cause you errors.

Try:
Running in OpenGL Mode for a few days. Does it still crash? You could just have a faulty video card.

If it does still crash, try swapping out the RAM. You could have bad RAM. There are also RAM diagnostic tools out there, but I haven't ever looked myself.

When you reinstall solidworks, do you wipe the system registry? Did you reinstall Windows as well?

Can you use "configure feature" "configure sketch" and "configure component" instead of a full design table? If it makes your problem go away this might be the way to go. Yes, it is a work-around.

  I did try to run in OpenGL for a while, but I'll try that again. I've run the memory diagnosis that runs in BIOS at boot, and no problems where reported. Its my understanding that there could still be issues, so maybe a memory swap is justified.
  
  When I reinstalled SW, I did wipe the registry. I havent reinstalled Windows - this is an I.T. thing. I think this might be the next step.
  
  I do use the configure dialogs when possible, but with parts I have to have the DT to show the data on the drawings.
  
  I would really like to try SW2011 to see if some of these issues are fixed, but our I.T. guys just mumbled something about having to 'validate in our environment' which is code for 'its gonna take months'. I know at least one issue with DT's is fixed, and it may be related.

A little more info on the nature of the crashes...

If I create a new part, I can make complex changes to the DT with no problems. No matter what I do, I cant get SW to crash.

I save locally to my hard drive (not over the net). Could my virus scanner be screwing up my files?

I am also crashing. I did a clean re-instal of SW 2010. I crash so far when i try to change a line to a center line. Kicks me completly out of SW. Also When I try to create a plane, and other simple tasks. I did not have ths problem before but as soon as the company i work for decided not to renew supscription I've been living a nightmare. No Support. Any suggestions???

  What SP are you running?
  
  While not renewing your support is not such a good idea, it should absolutely have nothing to do
  with why your sustem is crashing. Have you ever saved your Solidworks settings?
  
  Have you tried uninstalling Solidworks, cleaning out the registry and reinstalling it?
  
  Did you try running Solidworks RX? Maybe you should and submit it Solidworks like Daniel did and reference the
  SPR number to Vajrang above as well.

I've been using openGL for a day, and it seems to have improved my crash rate significantly. If I understand this correctly, that points the finger at my graphics card. Could this be a software conflict with the graphics drivers?

I'll try disabling the Adept add-in today.

  Disable the hardware accelerator for the card. If this corrects the problem, then start bumping it up until the problem reappears. Then back off one click.
