I am designing a Fixture for a co-workers assembly and getting messages I am not used to. Can someone please clarify. The messages are as folllows, when I try to save my file for the first time, the choices are do I want to save "Read Only Doc's" which in this case is his Main Assy that is in use by him. When I select the "Do not Save Read Only Button" Then I'm getting a question if I want to save "Internally to the assembly, or Externally. Can someone please explain/advise -Thanks
Thanks for responding Daniel. Let me go into a bit more detail on this Fixture I'm designing so that hopefully you can guide me. I'm sorry but I'm still a little unsure what to do based on your answer. I made a copy of another Design (Assy) that was similar to the new assy I'm designing. I made a copy of one of the parts of the original assy and replaced it in the new assy using replace components. I then brought in my co-workers Large Assy to fit into the Fixture and started modifying the new plate I had copied. When I tried to save all this I started getting these messages/options. Does this help in answering my question any better? I sure hope so. Thanks for your time Daniel. This is my first time in the Forum - my appologies if I miss something here.

Ok FM Feature manager. Here is an attachment. The list is long, had to break it up in 2 parts.
Hi Raymond. I don't see any virtual parts in your Feature Tree Manager. Whenever you say you made a "copy of" an assy similar to what you need, did you save as, save as copy, or did you pack-n-go? I'm still not sure I can follow you on how you approached this. I think there have been too many "save(d) as" rather than "save(d) as copy" and whenever you try saving it may be asking you the internal/external question regarding one of the copied files you made this assembly from.

Hello Daniel - I did do a Save As - Save As Copy for both the Assy and one of the Parts. I'll take a look at the link you provided thanks.
hmm - no virtual components shown. then it has to be in the sub-assy (93-00669) if that is the read-only assembly from your co-worker, your answer to the internal/external question is moot - you don't want to change the assy, or any of its parts so choose internal. this will keep the assy unchanged. choosing external will only make a new file that is not used anywhere.
Well for whatever it's worth here I just ended saving what I was being forced to save. My coworker and I went through this together to see if anything was going to backfire. I had no choice but to save his subassemblies, and I did a save External because I did not want a virtual part in this assembly. So far on my end everything seems to be normal, and my co-worker will keep an eye out on his end in order to see if anything is out of the ordinary. I will keep everyne posted should something backfires. Thanks for all the help, I'm sure I'll be back.
the internal/external question means that at least one part in the assembly is a "virtual component" if you chose internal, it will stay a virtual component. if you chose external, it will be a separate file. both have their advantages - you will have to decide which way to go.
Hi Raymond my guess would be either you have incontext or parts created within an assembly and it wants to know if you want those internally created parts or incontext info to be saved internally within the fixture you're creating or externally as separate parts.
Or it may wanting to know if you wish the fixture you're creating to be saved internally in your co-workers assembly or externally as a separate part/subassembly.
