Allowing Viewers to view the last "approved" version (and design Revision)

Questions

1) I have the PDMW set up at the minute just testing it and at the moment if i check out a file to work on. Other Users (mainly read only) need to be able to View and print the Last approved version to work to.

2) Im having trouble setting up the Revision to work properly. currently everytime it just checks in the revision Ticks over. How do i set it up so we have a "desgin" revision IE Pre Realise.

Info that might help is that i have my Access Controlled via Life cycle Release,Underchange,Underreview and Approved.

I think you just do this through lifecycle.
Set those that are read only to only be able to view the lifecycle "Approved".
When a job is is design or changes, then won't be able to see it because the lifecycle will be in a different state.

  I understand that but the problem is. Im thinking it now depends on how you update the drawing for parts.
  
  Part 1 is currently Released.
  
  I take part 1 to under change
  
  The guys on the shop floor manufacturing still need to be able to manufacture Part 1 and access the drawings.
  
  While im updating the desgin "model"
  
  so unless when i re check in the model the drawing updates - but then this would still need approval - untill it was approved they need to be able to use the previous revision.

    Surely if the part is under change, then you are allowing them to work off of a part which is wrong or out of date?

      Yes, i agree.
      
      Which is kind of why i need help.
      
      We continuously manufacture. while we are manufacturing we are developing these parts and models.
      so they could be currently manufacturing something which is fine, but we are developing a newer one. once its approved - when they print out that Drawing number next - it will have the modified part.
      
      Does that make sense?

        Yes sorry... I took it that you meant the part was wrong and needed changing, not that you were furthering the design. In my eyes it would be a new part, new number etc.

        Yes that's a Very valid point.
        
        I think for the majority of cases that will be True,
        
        But for example if im Developing a new part, which requires a hole centre location change on another part.
        
        see how, until the main New part is released the "subsequent" change cannot happen.
        
        - Thinking of every worse case scenario is hard when implementing PDM. I Just don't want to get caught out.

        There is an "in work" status that can be used in Workgroup's lifecycle. If you make a change and check the part in under this status, it would carry a "+" sign in the rev field. You could instruct anyone needing to access the file to be sure to disregard a rev carrying the "+" sign. When accessing the file for production, the last rev not containing a "+" should be opened.

Does your shop work on "solidworks" or "SolidWorks explorer".
If they use SW Explorer (viewer), that means even if you add a new model, if they print drawing from explorer, it gives you last version of drawing without showing any changes done on the model.
