OK, this is really starting to bug me.
I can apply an appearance to a part, tweak the color, tweak the other appearance settings, save the part--fine. There's a welcome return of the Copy and Paste for appearances again (at least with PhotoWorks on the machine--not sure if this is universal). The problem is that it doesn't actually Copy or Paste the appearance. It seems to do something, but it doesn't really replicate the actual appearance.
Why not? Am I doing something wrong? Will this be fixed anytime soon? I never use raw primary colors for, say, low-gloss plastic, since everything ultimately needs to be matched to a Pantone equivalent (or whatever) to be fully specified for production. So ALL parts are eventually tweaked from defaults. When something as useful as Copy/Paste for appearances doesn't work, I need to go into each appearance on EACH part and tweak EACH of the various categories of the appearance. If anything changes (say, when tuning things in during rendering), this must then be done ALL OVER AGAIN for EVERY part. (Can you sense my exasperation here?)
