Are drawing templates embedded in drawings or just linked to?

I've searched the SolidWorks help and this forum, but can't find out whether drawing templates are saved/embedded within a drawing (and hence static from the time the drawing is created) or just linked (allowing changes in the template to be propagated to the drawing the next time it's opened) - I think it's the former. Do you have an option on which method to use?

As a concrete example, I'd like to put our drawing templates in a fixed location on a network drive, where we could update the title block, company logo etc. as required. These changes would then appear the next time drawings using the templates are opened?

Any comments welcome, just starting to explore my options.
