Hi all,
This may be easy but I am a new user. How do I take an extrusion and configure it so when it is imported into an assembly the user can input the length of the extrusion?
Thanks!

create your extrusion. double click it in your graphics area so the length dim appears. right click this and choose configer dimension. you can then input new sizes onto the table.
You can also use design tables, but not sure how you do this.
this is assuming there is a specific number of lengths and you can set up the configuration ahead of time. If you need different lengths on the fly then that is a different process. And further yet, if you need lengths driven by your assembly and don't want a configuration for each length, then that is also a different process.
If you are going to create configs then I vote for doing it the way Greg says, you can always get into DT stuff after you get that first table done, but the Configure Dimension box is a very fast way to get what you want.
Thanks everyone for responding. I am looking to make it assembly driven. I want it so when I select the extrusion by clicking Inser Component it gives me an input box to select the length. Is this very complicated?
Do you mean you want to be able to type in any figure once inserted into assembly? or use pre-defined length's?

Jason,
Sorry, your statement is contradicting to me. Do you want the length of the extrusion to be driven by the assembly (see Top Down options here: http://help.solidworks.com/2010/English/SolidWorks/SWHelp_List.html?id=c15c6e7046d64ba1bb311cdb3c0e1191#Pg0)
or do you want to type the value of the length upon inserting into the assembly (see Single Configuration model here: http://help.solidworks.com/2010/English/solidworks/sldworks/allcontent/solidworks/core/configuration/t_cfgpub_creating_a_propertymanager_-_single-row_design_table.htm)
or do multiple configurations before (see here: http://help.solidworks.com/2010/English/SolidWorks/sldworks/AllContent/SolidWorks/Core/Configuration/t_CfgPub_Creating_a_PropertyManager_-_Multiple-Row_Design_Table.htm?id=1e0a8bdbbf344e80b73e51d8d5004657#Pg0)
