I was unlucky in that I missed activation of SW 2010 before the 30 day trial expired due to my vacation, now I can't run Solidworks to activate it. How do you resolve this or at least start SW to Activate it?
Contact your VAR in case you bought a Commercial license.
And look here for Student version support : Link to contact student edition support for technical issues.
When a SolidWorks grace period expires, you should at least be prompted with the activation wizard on startup so that you can perform your activation.
Is this not the case?

I'm having this problem now. I was never provided with an opportunity to activate before it expired. Now even reinstalling the software won't let me open and activate it.
speak to your VAR, they should be able to activate it for you.
I don't even know who that would be. I'm using the SEK and was told to leave that part of the form blank
From the access instructions form, (Student Access Products for Engineering Students - SOLIDWORKS SOLIDWORKS ) it looks like you're supposed to get the SEK-ID from your instructor.
If you purchased or received a physical media kit (DVD's) then try entering the SDK-ID, "which is printed on the inside," instead of the SEK.
I entered the correct SEK ID, it's just that I was told to leave the VAR section blank, so I don't know who our VAR is
