Proper use of design tables vs document properties or config properties

I have used design tables for ever for pulling information on parts for the BOM and drawing templates.  I used to be very configuration-happy with my parts and assemblies and using the design table made sense to me for ease of control.  Now that most of my models do not have configurations (save for tube and other items that I use in varying lengths) Im wondering if using the design table for drawing information is still the best way to do things.  In my tube example I was able to create a table and it was very easy to make a large number of configurations quickly.

So, other than using design tables for controlling large amounts of configs, am I using best practice methods here or is there an easier way to manage model info in order to populate drawings and BOM's?
